Deep Analytical Expertise with Local Accountability
Scion Instruments Canada exists to give Canadian laboratories something increasingly rare: deep analytical expertise backed by local accountability. You should not have to choose between proven global technology and hands-on Canadian support.
Your operation depends on both, and most suppliers make you choose.
Canadian-Owned · Edmonton-Based · Measure With Confidence
Across the country, laboratories are facing tightening compliance requirements, leaner teams, aging infrastructure, more demanding applications, and growing pressure for defensible data.
Internal expertise is thinning. Expectations are rising. Technology is advancing faster than many organizations can adapt to.
At the same time, most analytical instrument suppliers are consolidating into global enterprises that sell hardware from a distance and leave the integration work to the customer.
Canadian laboratories need something different: a partner on the ground, with real technical depth, who will stay involved after the order has been placed.
Why we exist
Canadian laboratories are being asked to do more, with less support than ever.
Watch the Scion story
The story, in their own words
Two minutes with the founders on why Scion Instruments Canada exists and what it takes to measure chemistry you can defend.
The people behind Scion Instruments Canada spent decades building the tools that became the industry standard, one system at a time. They continue adapting their solutions to the changing needs of Canadian laboratories. Systems built by Canadians for Canadians. This is their story.
Rooted in chromatography
From Varian to Scion to Scion Instruments Canada.
The company’s founders built their careers at Varian, a pioneering force in analytical instrumentation whose GC platforms shaped the industry for decades.
When Varian’s chromatography technologies changed hands through global consolidation, the platforms continued under Bruker.
The technology and products arrived at Techcomp and were rebranded as Scion. The name itself reflects that lineage: a Scion is the descendant of a notable family line, in this case a family line of scientific innovation.
Techcomp invited the founders to establish an independent Canadian organization to distribute and support chromatography systems nationally.
Scion Instruments Canada Ltd was incorporated that December as a separate, independent Canadian company and the exclusive Canadian distributor of Scion instruments.
A working research laboratory serving Canadian operators, system design, build, method development, training, support, and custom research on real customer problems.
The mission evolved quickly. From strictly distribution, the company evolved into a hands-on partner that sells capability, not instruments. At the same time, customers kept showing up with problems that had no off-the-shelf answers: difficult matrices, custom methods, aging Varian systems nobody else could service.
Scion Instruments Canada Ltd expanded beyond distribution into applied analytical problem solving, adding expertise, capabilities and products along the way. That is still the core of the business today.
The evolution
From distribution to problem solving.
Today, Scion Instruments Canada operates as a Canadian analytical solutions partner with deep specialization in gas analysis, particularly by GC and GC-MS. We begin every engagement by mapping workflow from sample to result.
We configure and build systems around real use cases. We validate performance in our own laboratory whenever possible, before field deployment, so that timelines are realistic, and risk is understood in advance.
Customers receive full lifecycle support: installation, customization, automation, training, service, upgrades, and ongoing technical guidance. The focus is a service that contains a product, not a product with service attached.

WORKING LAB
Not a showroom — a real research facility.
Our Edmonton facility is not a showroom. It’s a working research laboratory where real customer problems are solved on real instruments before they ship.
Method development happens here. Validation happens here. Custom research happens here. Training happens here. When we say we validate performance before deployment, this is where it happens, and when a customer asks whether a novel method will actually work in their laboratory, the answer starts with us running it in ours first.
- Method development — For standard and non-standard matrices
- Pre-deployment validation — Acceptance criteria set in advance
- Custom research — SR&ED-validated R&D program
- Hands-on training — On your equipment, not simulators
Our laboratory
A working research laboratory, not a demo room.
We built this because Canadian labs were being asked to do more with less, and somebody had to answer the phone.
— the Scion Canada team
Vision
To be Canada’s most trusted partner for high-stakes analytical chemistry, specifically for gas analysis. The team that Canadian laboratories call when the measurement actually matters.
Mission
We design, build, validate, and support analytical systems that help Canadian laboratories produce reliable, defensible results.
